Griest Building - Commercial

Lancaster, PA

Griest Building

During his 45-year career in Lancaster, C. Emlen Urban designed many of Lancaster County’s notable buildings, including the Griest Building which is considered Urban’s signature design and first noted skyscraper. Built in 1924 and individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 14-story high rise was named for the former head of Public Utilities and Pennsylvania Representative William Walton Griest and sits on Penn Square - the city’s most prominent location.

Over the past 23 years, Hammel Associates has completed multiple projects for Ecklin Development. Projects have included lobby renovations and restorations on all 14 floors, modernization of public restrooms and office modernization on multiple floors within the W.W. Griest Building.

Office Modernization

Multiple projects throughout the building have included fitout of various office spaces for new tenants, incorporating historic reference detailing and restoration of the original floors.

Lobby Renovation

The lobby renovation replaced a modern stair with an appropriate historic reference design, added new light fixtures, restored plaster and travertine marble details and added a fountain.
